The Wienerwald: cultural heritage
A biosphere park is a landscape which is under the UNESCO's protection. There are six biosphere parks in Austria and the Wienerwald is one of them.

The 105.000-hectare-big biosphere park covers 51 municipalities in Lower Austria and seven districts in Vienna. The Wienerwald region belongs to the biggest, closed deciduous woodland areas of Middle Europe and is one of the most species-rich woods of Austria.

For the people who live in the Wienerwald region it is a living space, an economic and a recreational area. Since 2005 the biosphere park sets the stage for a reasonable and sustainable cooperation of often very diverse interests.

The three major functions of UNESCO biosphere parks are:
  • Protection of ecosystems and landscapes, preservation of biological and cultural diversity and genetic resources
  • Development and promotion of ecologically, economically and socioculturally sustainable forms of land use
  • Assistance of research, environment observation and educational activities for better understanding of the interaction between human and nature

In Austria there are more regions which are under the UNESCO's special protection: The Untere Lobau in Vienna, the Neusiedlersee lake in Burgenland and the two Tyrolean alpine regions Gurgler Hauptkamm and Gössenköller See, as well as the big Walsertal valley in Vorarlberg.
