Description

Today's Arnulf Rainer Museum is housed in a building in Baden that is particularly historically turbulent: It was formerly replaced by the Frauenkirche, and from 1821 it was the famous Frauenbad - built according to a design by Charles de Moreau, one of the most important architects of French classicism. After the bathing establishment was closed down in 1972, the building functioned as a supra-regional exhibition centre.

In 2006 it was dedicated to the artist Arnulf Rainer from Baden. The opening of the newly adapted museum - a successful combination of historical and modern buildings - took place in 2009.

Arnulf Rainer: Worldwide success story from Baden

Arnulf Rainer is considered the founder of Informel (French: art informel - “formless art") in Austria. His overpaintings made him internationally famous from the 1950s onwards. Today he is one of the most influential contemporary living artists. With the Arnulf Rainer Museum, the City of Baden - in cooperation with the Land Niederösterreich - is dedicating an institution to him that illustrates his complexity. The programme includes permanent and special exhibitions.

Contemporary art under a listed roof

Every 1st Friday of the month the Arnulf Rainer Museum invites you on an architectural tour: The listed Frauenbad is explored - with lots of valuable information on the classicist splendour of the building. During the guided tour, visitors also learn more about the spa culture of past centuries.

Regular guided tours on Saturday and Sunday as well as on public holidays are devoted to the current exhibitions - and present the historical Frauenbad along their tours.
