Great Peilstein circuit via Hafnerberg

Hiking tour Starting from Municipality of Weissenbach an der Triesting, parking lot at the train station

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Distance: 15,41 km
  • Duration: 5:00 h
  • Ascent: 488 m elevation gain
  • Descent: 487 m elevation gain

Weissenbach is located in the Triesting Valley exactly where the Furtherbach flows into the valley from the southwest and the Neuhauserbach from the north. The former summer resort, still accessible by train, serves as a starting point for several beautiful hikes. West of Weissenbach rises the Hocheck, which at 1,037 m altitude already offers an extensive hike. The hiking experience is completed by a lookout tower on the summit with a great 360° panorama. North of the Triesting, more leisurely hikes predominate through the typical Viennese Forest landscape, with gentler hills and forest areas interrupted by many meadows and pastures. Here one encounters both the regionally typical black pine forests as well as magnificent beech high forests. An exception in these gentle landscapes is the Peilstein, whose limestone cliffs rise prominently above the forest and which is the traditional climbing area for Viennese climbers. In Weissenbach itself, the Triesting Valley Museum is worth visiting; it presents about 10,000 exhibits from the valley in its extensive collection, as well as the church and the cemetery. In the district of Neuhaus, the renovated Neuhaus Castle with the parish and the forest classroom are worth a visit.

Description

You can also travel to this hike by public transport (Triesting Valley railway, Weissenbach train station).

From the station, you first pass through the town of Weissenbach and hike a short stretch along the B 18 before turning into the Raintal and into nature. Along a wooded ridge between Nöstachbach and Triesting, you walk northwest. The forest is then replaced by meadow landscapes and soon the Hafnerberg pilgrimage church comes into view, the destination of the first section. After visiting this baroque church, you have to walk a bit along the road towards Nöstach, but soon you turn onto a side road. You cross the Nöstachbach and shortly thereafter reach the Mostheurige Karner. Here begins the ascent to Peilstein (716 m), initially through meadow landscapes, then through beech forest. The descent to Neuhaus leads alternately over several meadows and forest sections, and at the end you have a wonderful view over to Neuhaus Castle. Once the road is reached, you walk through Neuhaus (or take a detour to the castle and the forest classroom) and finally back through the forest to Weissenbach.

All in all, this creates an extensive circular hike through typical Viennese Forest landscapes connecting the highlights Hafnerberg, Peilstein, Neuhaus Castle. Along the way, there are several opportunities for refreshment.
