Tamberg circular hiking route
Hiking tour Starting from Church at Hafnerberg
- Difficulty: Easy
- Distance: 4,02 km
- Duration: 1:30 h
- Ascent: 132 m elevation gain
- Descent: 133 m elevation gain
The market town of Altenmarkt is located in the Triesting valley, which also forms the southern border of the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve. This is the largest closed deciduous forest area in Europe. To the north of the Triesting, hiking opportunities typical of the Vienna Woods therefore predominate over gentle hills, through deciduous forests, across meadows and past individual farmsteads. The best starting point for these well-developed hiking trails is on the Hafnerberg. To the south of the Triesting rises the steep, wooded northern flank of the Hocheck, the easternmost one-thousand-meter peak in the Alps, offering hikers a longer tour to the viewing tower. In addition to the enjoyment of nature, it is also the sacred buildings along the Via Sacra that attract many visitors to Altenmarkt. Three pilgrimage churches (Klein Mariazell, Hafnerberg and Altenmarkt) are located in the municipality and are connected by a scenically varied hiking trail. Around Hafnerberg and Nöstach there are many mystical places, places of power, which are also worth a visit and some of which can be hiked individually.

Around Hafnerberg and Nöstach there are many mystical places, places of power, which are also worth a visit and some of which can be hiked individually.
This short but varied hike takes you around the Tamberg, a 560 m high wooded ridge that stretches from the Hafnerberg to the north-east, in a clockwise direction. Before setting off, however, you should pay a visit to the baroque pilgrimage church "Unserer lieben Frau" on the Hafnerberg to see the baroque high altar and the ceiling fresco.
From the church, it is just a few steps to the sparse pine forest, where a Way of the Cross with 14 stations leads gently uphill to the Fuchsbauern Chapel. You pass a mystical place with a perforated stone. A short detour takes hikers to the mystical Druidenstein site, a rock needle on a hilltop. On the way to the Fuchsbauer farm, you pass the Kalendarium with the Visurhügel and other perforated stones. The view here extends from Peilstein via St. Pankraz and in the other direction from Reisalpe via Araburg to Hocheck. After turning right at the Hübnerkreuz, you lose about 100 meters in altitude to the Nöstachbach. The way back leads mainly along the eastern edge of the Tamberg with views of Peilstein and Nöstach back to the Hafnerberg. There is a refreshment stop at the beginning and end of the tour (Gasthaus zur Linde, Hafnerberg).
- Equipment Normal hiking equipment
- Route description From the parking lot north of the church, follow the signposts Kleinmariazell: WWW 06 red-white-redVia Sacra circular hiking route, "Mystical Places, Druidenstein and Kalendarium," and climb briefly steeply at the chapel "In Honor of Moricus." (Here, the Panorama circular hiking route branches off to the right.)On a forest road over a saddle and then on a beautiful, wide hiking trail through bright pine forest, you pass 14 stations of the Stations of the Cross. After passing through a gate and past a hole stone, you reach the bright meadows around the Fuchsbauer Chapel. The path descends slightly to another gate, in front of which you briefly climb left on a path to a wooded hill where the Druidenstein is located. Back to the gate and level over the meadow you come to the Fuchsbauer farm (Kalendarium, hole stones), which you pass on the east side with a view. 300 m after the farm, you reach the Hübner Cross. Here you turn right onto the asphalt road and follow the blue marking towards Nöstach. Downhill on the asphalt road past the Seidl farm, after 700 m and 100 meters in altitude you reach the Nöstachbach with the Budler Bridge. You leave the asphalt road before the bridge to the right (sign Tamberg circular route) and follow a forest road briefly on the right side of the stream until, just before a meadow, a path leads right up along the forest edge. Soon you reach a comfortable forest road, which you follow gently uphill, always along the forest edge or just inside the forest, back to Hafnerberg.
