Klausen-Leopoldsdorf: A History of Timber Rafting
The Klausen-Leopoldsdorf timber rafting area was established in 1667 as an imperial timber rafting facility in the Schwechat Valley. With 14 log flumes, it was used to transport felled timber to Vienna. In the mid-18th century, carpenters from the Salzkammergut founded the settlement of Leopoldsdorff in the Claußen—thus laying the foundation for today’s Klausen-Leopoldsdorf. Some of the historic log flumes—such as the main flume and the Lengbachl or Riesenbach flumes—still shape the landscape today.

The numerous charming residential buildings of a planned settlement from the early 20th century are impressive. These beautiful rural buildings are listed as historic landmarks. Also well worth seeing is the Baroque parish church of St. Leopold, built in 1755.
