Description
Old hunting lodge of Crown Prince Rudolf
Carmel Mayerling is the former hunting lodge of Crown Prince Rudolf and the original site of the bloody tragedy of 30 January 1889. After the tragedy, Emperor Franz Josef I immediately had the hunting lodge converted into a Carmelite convent. The church of Carmel Mayerling stands on the exact spot where the bloody deed was committed and Crown Prince Rudolf and his lover Mary Baroness Vetsera died.
The Carmelite nuns live a hidden life. They earn their living through the income from the guided tours. On a guided tour, you can see the magnificent church, the Elisabeth Chapel and several showrooms with the imperial foundation chalice, the desecrated ceremonial coffin of Mary Vetsera and panels depicting the tragedy of Mayerling.
Guided tours for groups of 15 people or more are possible. We only offer guided tours in German, but provide the option of translation.
The exhibition also guides individual tourists through the entire area with the help of the many German and English accompanying texts. If interested, an audio guide in 5 different languages can be used for an extra charge of + € 3.
The spacious grounds of Karmel Mayerling, which surround the impressive site, are particularly worth seeing. A very special excursion awaits you!
