Description

The Wienerwaldmuseum Eichgraben documents the history of the municipality of Eichgraben and its surroundings. In addition to the permanent collections, there are changing special exhibitions.

The permanent collections in the Wienerwaldmuseum Eichgraben cover the topics of geology, archaeology, folklore and crafts. The indoor exhibition is connected to an open-air museum. Parents and children can also visit the "KuMst" cave, a naturalistic reconstruction of a cave that combines scientific and artistic elements and reveals their significance.

In the field of geology, the experimental geology with microscopes, scratch samples, hardness tests, magnetism etc. is particularly interesting for children. Here they can get to work themselves and, for example, determine the hardness of minerals and gain insightful experience on the subject by trying things out.

The archaeology collection covers prehistory and early history, starting with the Neolithic period (mining and the first settlements in the Vienna Woods) and covering the eras from the Bronze Age and Iron Age to Roman rule.

The folklore collection in the local history museum shows the history of settlement and local history in the Eichgraben area. From the first documented mention of the village of "Aichgrawe" onwards, documents tell of the social life of the inhabitants over the centuries. This is multifaceted and changeable: the poverty of the Hüttler in the 17th century, hunger and hardship during the Turkish wars, but also prestige and prosperity at a time when Eichgraben was a popular summer resort.

At least once a month, families can immerse themselves in the past (for a small extra charge) at the "Living Crafts" demonstration: Potters, blacksmiths, carpenters, tailors, shoemakers and basket weavers demonstrate their skills in the Handwerksstadel. From April to the end of September, experienced craftsmen are present on the last Sunday of every month and demonstrate their respective work with old tools. Children are also allowed to use the tools themselves to get a vivid impression of how a craft is practiced.

Our book library is also open on these days.

The open-air museum displays agricultural equipment, explains the laborious work of harvesting grain in the past and exhibits various tools used for winter work. The open-air site also includes a charcoal pile and a Roman grave from the archaeological collection.

Finally, the "KuMst" cave, a naturalistic reconstruction of a Vienna Woods cave, provides artistic and scientific insights. On the one hand, it conveys the importance of caves as dwellings, places of refuge, hunting stations, places of worship and burial for prehistoric man; on the other hand, it is about experiencing the feeling of space in a cave and grasping its nature with all the senses.

Guided tours are possible by appointment.
