Mountain bike tour Starting from Forest Road
Attention: Winter closure from November 1 to February 28, the season starts again on March 1! The South Tyrolean Trail is one of the trail highlights in the Vienna Woods. It descends 325 meters down to the Weidling Valley. Flowing passages alternate with technical treats, which are topped off by a few small jumps (which can always be ridden around and over). So be careful: you should also have sufficient MTB experience here and take a rather passive approach on your first ride!

The South Tyrolean Trail starts just east of the Jägerwiese. The upper section starts off rather easy with a slight gradient, but changes abruptly in between with more difficult passages through old bomb craters. Before it crosses the first forest road, there are a few tricky bends to negotiate. In the middle of the long and quite challenging trail, you cross the Kahlenbergerdorf route (forest road). From there, you can continue your tour either towards Grüass Di a Gott Wirt or in the direction of Schönstatt Trail or Leopoldsberg. The second section starts off flowing again with a few waves before it gets a little steeper after the second forest road crossing. After another somewhat flatter section, you reach the main road in Weidling (L116) and can turn left via the stream trail to the Weidlingbach or Dombachgraben trail park. If you want to get back to the start, to the Dornröschen or Schönstatt trail, turn right shortly before reaching the asphalted Südtiroler Weg, up the Südtiroler Uphill.

Notes: A few small jumps add some excitement to this trail, but they can all be ridden over or around. The trail crosses two forest roads—please watch out for oncoming traffic! Please adjust your speed accordingly!
Before every ride, check that your brakes, tires, and suspension fork/shock are in good working order. Always ride with an eye out for hazards and at a controlled speed, and choose a route that suits the group’s riding ability and the terrain. The Fair Play rules must be observed at all times. Single/shared trails, as well as built trails in trail parks and trail centers, feature an increased number of rocks, roots, steep sections, steps, and sharp turns that require a certain level of riding skill. If in doubt, simply dismount and walk your bike.
A safe and roadworthy mountain bike is a prerequisite for all routes. A helmet and gloves provide protection in the event of a fall, and knee and elbow pads can be added when riding on single or shared trails. A modern mountain bike with disc brakes and sufficient tire tread is recommended. For single and shared trails rated red difficulty or higher, a full-suspension bike with modern geometry is recommended. Tools, a tire lever, a pump, and a spare tube will help in case of a flat tire. You should also carry enough food and drink, as well as a cell phone and a windbreaker or rain jacket.
The elevation data for this route was calculated based on A-MAP. Due to differences in the map data used by various routing and navigation apps and devices, slight variations in the figures are inevitable. You can find more information on this in the following blog post!
