The market town of Altenmarkt is located in the valley of the Triesting, which also forms the southern border of the Wienerwald Biosphere Reserve. This is the largest contiguous deciduous forest area in Europe. Therefore, typical Wienerwald hiking opportunities prevail north of the Triesting across gentle hills, through deciduous forests, over meadows, and past individual farms. The best starting point for these well-developed hiking trails is at Hafnerberg.
South of the Triesting rises the steep wooded northern flank of the Hocheck, the easternmost thousand-meter peak of the Alps, offering hikers a longer route to the observation tower.
In addition to enjoying nature, it is also the sacred buildings on the Via Sacra that attract many visitors to Altenmarkt. There are 3 pilgrimage churches (Klein Mariazell, Hafnerberg, and Altenmarkt) located in the municipality, connected by a scenic and varied hiking trail. Around Hafnerberg and Nöstach, there are many mystical places, places of power, which are also worth a visit and can partly be explored individually by hiking.
The Panorama Trail offers a connection of culturally and historically interesting places, such as the pilgrimage church at Hafnerberg and several mystical spots along the route, with uniquely scenic sections. Already on the first section along the Tamberg, you can enjoy views of Peilstein, Nöstach, and Pankrazi (mountain and fortified church).
You almost get alpine impressions on the beautiful path from Planer Kreuz to Hof Kollecker, where larch-enriched pastures and meadows open the view over the eastern foothills of the Alps with Anninger, Eisernes Tor, Peilstein up to Hocheck, extending to the Vienna Basin and the Leithagebirge.
The total approx. 2.8 km asphalt section hardly disturbs the overall impression of the hike, as the hiker always has something to see off the trail.
There are no refreshment opportunities along the way, but a stopover is possible directly at the start and end point of the hike, Gasthaus zur Linde, at Hafnerberg.
Starting point of the tourChurch at Hafnerberg
From the parking lot north of the church, follow the signs for about 100 m to Kleinmariazell: WWW 06 red-white-red, Via Sacra Circular Trail, “Mystical Places, Druid Stone and Calendar” and climb briefly steeply at the chapel “In Honor of Moricus”. Here, the Panorama Circular Trail branches off to the right (after the last garden fence) (sign: Panorama Circular Trail). A wide, flat forest road initially runs along the fence and then along the east side of Tamberg in the forest. At the end of the forest road, a forest path continues in the same direction and leads further north along the forest edge. Shortly after a rock and rock needle, a gravel path joins from the right, but you continue along the forest edge. Repeatedly, there are beautiful views here of Peilstein, Pankrazi and Nöstach. Along a meadow, a narrow path finally leads down to the Nöstachbach at the forest edge. Here you briefly turn downhill on a wide path to finally cross the stream (Budler Bridge, sign Panorama Circular Trail).
Now you stay on the asphalt road always following the stream in the trench. After 150 m, ignore the turnoff Güterweg Nagl (up to the right) and continue. At a junction after 700 m, leave the driveway to “Gestüt Kollecker” on the left and follow the road to the right further into the trench (sign Panorama Circular Trail). Increasingly climbing, passing farms, about 1.5 km after the Budler Bridge, a saddle with Planer Kreuz (Red Cross) is reached. Now 60 m to the left on asphalt until a gravel road branches off on the left. Follow this initially ascending then flatter over “Mountain and Trench”. This scenic section over the pastures offers a view from Anninger over Eisernes Tor, Peilstein to Hocheck. At a distinctive right curve, the highest point of the hike is reached at 620 m. From here, the path now leads slightly downhill through the forest for a short distance, then over meadows past a cross and wayside shrine (Kollecker) to a saddle with a hunting stand. To the right, the path to Glashütten branches off here. From here, follow the blue marking keeping left, through a gate, over a piece of meadow to a forest road, which leads downhill through the forest to Hof Wimmer (Mystical Places Wolfsgrube and Traubeneiche). Here the asphalt road starts again (sign: Hafnerberg 45 min), which you follow past the horse park along the blue marking (ignore turnoff Via Sacra to Kleinmariazell) to Hübner Kreuz. Here you leave the blue marking and turn gently right over to Hof Fuchsbauer (sign: Panorama Circular Trail). Directly at the farm, you encounter the mystical places Visurhügel and Lochstein. Past the farm and gently over the meadow you come to a gate. If you climb directly after the gate to the wooded hilltop (path), you will find the Druid Stone. Back at the gate, follow the path to the left around the hilltop (to the east), past the Fuchsbauer Chapel, and on a beautiful path through a light pine forest descending along the 14 stations of the Way of the Cross, the starting point Hafnerberg is reached.
A2 South Motorway exit Leobersdorf, on the Hainfelder federal road B 18 until shortly before Altenmarkt, turn right onto B 11 towards Alland until Hafnerberg.
Alternatively via the A 21 exit Alland or Mayerling, to Alland and turn onto B 11 to Nöstach and continue to Hafnerberg.
