Pfarrkirche Gainfarn

Church

Description

When Gainfarn became its own parish under the patronage of Melk Abbey in 1312, there was already a small wooden church there. Later, a larger church was built on the same site until the present Gainfarn parish church with its Baroque interior was finally built in 1744.

The altarpiece depicts the baptism of Jesus by St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of the church. The four almost life-size wooden figures by the altar are striking: St. Florian, St. Sebastian, St. Donatus and St. Leopold. On the long side of the three-aisled hall, several tombstones are attached to the wall or walled into the floor. The oldest commemorates Mrs. Helena Ficin, 1548.

The Sacred Heart Monastery is also located in the Gainfarn district (Brunngasse 49).
