From Vienna to the Adriatic
The idea of building a railroad line from Vienna to the Adriatic was first mooted in 1829. The original main line, which ran from Vienna via Lower Austria through Styria to the Slovenian border near Spielfeld-Stras as far as Ljubljana and on to Trieste, now stretches along the Adriatic coast.Today, it extends over the wing of the former Crown Prince Rudolf Railway, which connects via Carinthia to the Italian border at Thörl-Maglern.
