Description
The Bat Adventure Trail is an educational path that introduces us to bats with impressive play and learning stations and leads us to the Einödhöhlen caves, where these particularly protected cave dwellers live. The Einödhöhle is the largest preserved young tertiary wave-cut cave on the western edge of the Vienna Basin and was declared a natural monument in 1949. In the vicinity of the Einödhöhlen, an old forest playground has been developed as the "Bat Meadow" and equipped with appropriate play equipment.

If you still have energy after the trail, you can continue to the Rudolf-Proksch Hut and enjoy a fantastic view from there. For more information, click here!
Another highlight on the Bat Adventure Trail are the information boards on the topic of Wine Experience. They provide various information about, for example, the wine-growing history of Pfaffstätten, dry stone walls, and much more.

Route description Bat Adventure Trail Pfaffstätten
We start at the Leutgebhaus in Pfaffstätten, initially follow Josef-Dolp-Straße until we reach the end of the street at the Gfangl natural playground. When we reach the Spitz, we turn left and continue along Veiglstraßl. We pass the upcoming house on the left, go a few more meters ahead, then turn right and walk through a tunnel. We follow this path to the Landstraße, which we cross (CAUTION: busy road, please be careful!!). Then continue at the foot of the vineyards towards the Reb Lounge. At the Reb Lounge parking lot, there is an information board where you can orient yourself. The path goes up to the right (sign visible) continuing towards the vineyards. We pass the Fox's Rest, where we can take a short break if needed. We continue straight until we have to stop, then turn left and immediately right again to reach the water pipeline path. We follow this until the bridge – just before the bridge, there's a spot on the right for another rest. Then continue to the right in front of the bridge – again, there is an information board. We walk past Lamaste (or stop to learn about a Lama trekking tour). Following the road, we come out at a very small parking lot directly beside the street. We cross the street (CAUTION: busy road, please be careful!!) and follow Einödstraße until we see the three signs (bat, treble clef, and wine bottle). We cross the street again (CAUTION: busy road, please be careful!!) and see another information board. We continue uphill and enter the forest path leading to the Einödhöhlen.
Author's tip
Every single board on this path tells exciting facts about bats. For example, did you know that bats ...
- should NEVER be handled without gloves
- are highly endangered and protected by law
- must absolutely not be disturbed during hibernation
The last point is especially important, as otherwise they have too little energy to wake up and may die.
