The history of Hernstein dates back to the 11th century. The first castle was built here as part of the Bavarian settlement under Leopold III. After several changes of ownership - including by the diocese of Freising and various noble families - Hernstein remained an estate for a long time.
In 1683, the village was severely destroyed during the Turkish wars. Between 1727 and 1730, the "New Castle" was built, the foundation walls of which have been preserved to this day. At the end of the 18th century, the first conversions were carried out for residential purposes.
Schloss Hernstein owes its present form to Archduke Leopold Ludwig, who had the estate extensively rebuilt from 1856 onwards according to plans by architect Theophil Hansen. Over 28 years, a prestigious castle in the English Gothic style was created - with architectural details reminiscent of the Vienna Musikverein building.
The spacious park with its southern section and large pond still gives the palace its impressive setting today.
