Details for: Circular hike to the Araburg

Brief description

Kaumberg is the westernmost community in the Triestingtal, just before the Gerichtsberg, the watershed between the Triestingtal and the Gölsental. Here, the difference between the gentle hills of the Vienna Woods and the pre-Alpine region becomes clearly apparent. To the north and east of the village of Kaumberg, shorter hikes through hilly cultural landscapes are possible.

Description

Tip/Fun fact: The Araburg is, at almost 800 meters above sea level, the highest castle ruin in Lower Austria. From the 27-meter-high bergfried, one enjoys unforgettable views.

Route description Circular hike to the Araburg

Our path lies on the Via Sacra and the Vienna Pilgrim’s Way, and simultaneously on the long-distance hiking trail 06, and is accordingly marked in red, sometimes also green. We start our hike at the market square in Kaumberg. Past the war memorial with the barrel fountain (which supplied residents with drinking water until the 1950s, a nice rest spot), we immediately go right before the local museum up the steps to the parish church. Over the cemetery and through the mountain settlement, we leave the local area after about 1 km and follow a slightly ascending meadow path to the Mayerhof. Soon the Araburg is visible, offering a beautiful photo motif. We also see the parking lot of the Araburgstüberl, from which the ascent could be significantly shortened. From here, we enter the shady forest, where a trail leads us directly to the Araburg, the highest castle in Lower Austria. Visiting the partly well-preserved ruin from the 12th century is worthwhile. The view from the plateau of the bergfried is breathtaking. Before we begin the return journey, a visit to the cozy castle tavern is recommended. About 400 m east of the Araburg, we leave the long-distance hiking trail 04 to the right and follow the red markers to the barrier; from here we also have a yellow marker. Back in the village, we walk past the Kollmannshof and the Brennhof. Above the settlement area, a rest spot by the wayside cross invites you to linger and enjoy the wonderful view towards the Araburg and the pre-Alps. Via the Sonnenhang settlement, we return to the starting point.
