Araberg
Mountain summit
Description
The Araberg is an 814-meter-high mountain in the Triestingtal valley in the municipality of Kaumberg. It is mainly covered with deciduous forest. The Araberg is best known for the highest castle ruins in Lower Austria, the Araburg. It was built in 1180 to protect against enemies and as a place of refuge. The castle keep, which has been converted into an observation tower, offers a magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding area.
The village of Kaumberg lies at the source of the Triesting river and on the "Via Sacra", the pilgrimage route from Vienna to Mariazell. The contrast between the Vienna Woods region with its gently rolling hills and the Alpine foothills is particularly noticeable here.
