Description

History of the lookout and the shelter on the Buchberg

At the end of the 19th century, the Neulengbach association "D'Wildegger" (named after Wildegg Castle in the district of Mödling, near Heiligenkreuz) decided to build a lookout on the Buchberg. This was completed in 1901 and the "Wildegger-Schutzhaus" opened next door in 1907. Both buildings burn down in 1923 after a lightning strike.

In 1924, "D'Wildegger" rebuilt the shelter, which underwent numerous extensions in the following years. However, the control room was never rebuilt and the popular excursion destination was renamed the "Hans Krieger Huts" after the former chairman of the "D'Wildegger" club.

In 1949, the shelter burned down again and a hut was used as a bar for a few years. In 1954, a new mountain inn began to be built privately, the outlines of which still exist today. After a change of ownership, the restaurant was closed in 1980.

In 1982, a citizens' initiative acquired the land immediately adjacent to the refuge and made it available to the public. In 2002, the municipalities of Neulengbach, Maria Anzbach and Asperhofen also succeeded in acquiring the land of the former refuge. The aim of the "Tourismusgemeinschaft Buchberg" association, to which the aforementioned municipalities belong, is to develop the Buchberg back into a popular excursion destination.

The refuge was therefore opened in 2003 and has been run by Irene Cevela and Gerhard Köcher since 2006.

After 81 years, the new, imposing 22.5-metre-high Buchbergwarte is opened on 26 September 2004.
