Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve

Forest adventure right on Vienna's doorstep

The Vienna Woods, designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, is the only one of its kind in Europe that extends so close to a metropolis. This special connection between nature and urban life invites visitors to experience it on hikes, by bike or at cultural events.

The Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve stands for a harmonious combination of regeneration, activation and enjoyment. Directly adjacent to the metropolis of Vienna, this lush green forest offers a unique opportunity for calming exercise and refreshing relaxation. Since 2005, when the Vienna Woods were awarded UNESCO biosphere reserve status, a habitat worthy of protection for flora and fauna has been developing across 105,000 hectares. With the active participation of the local population and businesses, the park is developing into a model region for sustainable living.

Experiences in the Biosphere Reserve

The Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve offers a wide range of experiences: diverse hiking trails and varied cycling and mountain biking routes criss-cross the landscape, inviting active leisure seekers to explore nature in the immediate vicinity of Vienna. But the park also offers plenty of opportunities for those seeking peace and quiet and unspoilt nature. Whether for a short trip or a family holiday lasting several days, the rolling hills of the Vienna Woods are ideal for exploring from the region's excellent hotels or charming private rooms. Regional festivals and inns offering seasonal cuisine and local specialities round off the experience.

Nature parks in the Vienna Woods

The nature parks in the Vienna Woods offer characteristic landscapes and a wide range of nature experiences. They are dedicated to protecting biodiversity, which means that numerous rare plant and animal species are native to this area.

In the southern Vienna Woods lies the Sparbach Nature Park with its romantic ruins and free-roaming wild boars. The Purkersdorf Nature Park on the western outskirts of Vienna offers a wonderful view from the Rudolfshöhe and provides a pleasantly cool climate thanks to its shady beech forests. The Föhrenberge Nature Park, with its characteristic black pines and the dry grasslands of the Perchtoldsdorf Heath, stretches from the Mödling area to the southern edge of Vienna.
