Description

Winery since 1141 - limited quantities from own cultivation

South of Vienna, the Thermenregion stretches 50 kilometres in the direction of Wiener Neustadt. In the west, bordered by the slopes of the Anninger, the wine-growing region descends gently eastwards into the Pannonian plains. Thanks to a favourable climate and a variety of fertile soils, wine-growing in this special landscape has been flourishing for thousands of years. The Romans already recognised the extraordinary potential of the region and found in it the perfect conditions for the cultivation of wine.

The Thallern estate has a total of 30 hectares of vineyards. Protected by the Anninger on soils of weathered brown earth and shell limestone, the grapes reach their perfect degree of ripeness. They develop a multi-layered aroma and fascinating minerality.  The vineyards are cultivated in an ecologically sensitive manner, with a special focus on biodiversity. In addition to typical regional varieties, Burgundian varieties are also found.

The vineyards of the Freigut Thallern extend over the two wine-growing communities of Gumpoldskirchen and Pfaffstätten. Some of the best vineyards in the region are owned by the Freigut. They all bear resounding names such as "Wiege", "Ronald", "Alte Riede" and "Student". About 60% white wine and 40% red wine are produced on the vineyards, a modest amount of sparkling wine is also produced.
Typical for the Thermenregion, you will find both Rotgipfler and Zierfandlern as well as the white wine varieties grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Gemischter Satz. St. Laurent, Zweigelt and Pinot Noir have made a name for themselves among the red varieties. These varieties demand a great deal of knowledge and skill from the winemaker, but with the right dedication, premium quality authentic wines can be produced.
