Altenmarkt an der Triesting
The market town of Altenmarkt in the district of Baden is nestled between the wooded mountains of the Triestingtal valley. It comprises the cadastral communities of Altenmarkt, Klein-Mariazell, Nöstach, Sankt Corona and Thenneberg. The idyllic, wild and romantic landscape on the edge of the Vienna Woods is ideal for pilgrimage hikes, short breaks and family vacations.
Altenmarkt an der Triesting: pilgrimages & forest hikes
Altenmarkt lies directly on the Via Sacra, the holy road from Vienna to Mariazell. The important Altenmarkt pilgrimage churches Hafnerberg, Basilica Klein-Mariazell, Thenneberg, St. Corona and Altenmarkt bear witness to the municipality's long history of pilgrimage. The district of Klein-Mariazell is also the starting point of the new cultural region "Mariazell in the Vienna Woods", as the settlement of the Triestingtal valley began in the 12th century from the former Benedictine monastery of Mariazell in Austria.
The location on the edge of the Vienna Woods is perfect for long hikes and walks - for example up the Peilstein. Cyclists can enjoy numerous bike tours such as the Triesting-Gölsental cycle path or the family-friendly St. Corona route.
Historical sights in Altenmarkt
In addition to the famous pilgrimage churches, there are many other gems from bygone days to discover: The two-storey vicarage was built in 1785 over an even older original building. The pretty Nepomuk Chapel has stood on the Via Sacra since 1763. In Nöstach, you can visit the impressive ruins of the former parish church of St. Martin and the branch church of St. Pankratius. St. Corona is home to the beautiful Holy Fountain - a sculpture of the Holy Trinity from the second half of the 19th century.
