Description
Emperor Franz I strolled through the park, Napoleon's brother spent his exile here and Emperor Karl celebrated his 18th birthday. In the 1920s, the Red Archduchess hosted her mystical séances, the magic of which can still be felt today. For a few nights, you can join the illustrious ranks of the castle's residents: The suites and apartments have been stylishly renovated using the highest quality materials and offer elegant retreats. As part of a guided tour, you can explore the underground grottoes and the "Temple of the Night", a unique 18th-century experience that inspired Freemasons and Enlightenment philosophers. Surrounded by ancient giant trees, natural watercourses and extensive meadows, this place remains shrouded in legend, exclusive and fascinating.
Although there are no longer séances at Schönau Castle, there is a colorful cultural program. Those staying overnight in the castle or hunting lodge usually have one of Austria's most beautiful English landscape gardens all to themselves.
