The market town of Altenmarkt lies in the Triesting valley, which also forms the southern border of the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve. This is the largest closed deciduous forest area in Europe. To the north of the Triesting, hiking opportunities typical of the Vienna Woods therefore predominate over gentle hills, through deciduous forests, across meadows and past individual farmsteads. The best starting point for these well-developed hiking trails is on the Hafnerberg. In addition to the enjoyment of nature, it is also the sacred buildings along the Via Sacra that attract many visitors to Altenmarkt. Three pilgrimage churches (Klein Mariazell, Hafnerberg and Altenmarkt) are located in the municipality and are connected by a scenically varied hiking trail. Around Hafnerberg and Nöstach there are many mystical places, places of power, which are also worth a visit and some of which can be hiked individually. The village of St. Corona lies in the middle of the densely wooded area of the Schöpfl, which can be quickly climbed from here.

The hike up the Schöpf offers a short climb up the highest mountain in the Vienna Woods to the Matraswarte viewing tower. From here you can enjoy a 360° panorama that stretches from the Tullner Feld, across Vienna and the Vienna Basin to the Schneeberg and Ötscher. On the way back, it is worth taking a detour towards the "Mitterschöpfl" core zone of the Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve. The spruce and fir forest around the Leopold Figl Observatory offers wonderful impressions of nature.

Back in St. Corona, you can round off the program with a visit to the Meiselberghof adventure farm with its camels, llamas, alpacas, reindeer, emus, etc. or you can end the day in the St. Corona inn.

Route description
From the parking lot, head east toward the war memorial, which is already visible, and follow the sign that reads “Schöpflhütte, Matraswarte”—the blue trail marker—up the steep road. Pass the war memorial and the “Holy Well” until, after 40 meters, a steep road branches off to the left and continues uphill. Follow this road, leaving the church on your left, and continue along the steep paved road until it ends. Here, however, do not take the ravine path marked with blue (which is partially overgrown), but instead climb briefly up the steep gravel path to a large meadow with the wooden Peace Cross, visible from afar. Now continue on a gently ascending meadow path that leads uphill along the eastern edge of the meadow for 300 m. Before entering the forest, this meadow path rejoins the marked sunken path.
From here, the trail continues as a gravelly forest path into the mixed forest (blue markings), soon becoming somewhat steeper. After crossing a forest road, the route continues uphill on a wide hiking trail—partly rocky, partly loamy and damp—alternating through beech and spruce/fir forests. After crossing another forest road, you’ll soon reach the saddle between Schöpfl and Mitterschöpfl at an elevation of 825 m. Four forest roads meet here; follow the blue trail markers (sign indicating 10 min to the hut) in the same direction you’ve been heading, past a fenced-in rest area with a cross. After 30 m, you can either take the direct ascent route (a straight, steep path up) or the easier route a short distance to the right. Ascending through beech forest, you’ll quickly reach the summit meadow. At a rest bench at the upper edge of the meadow, keep to the right, following the ridge (blue and red markings) briefly into the forest; a few meters to the left, you’ll reach the observation tower at the summit (893 m).
After a break, return along the same path to the saddle between Schöpfl and Mitterschöpfl at an elevation of 825 m (fenced rest area with a cross). Here, take the forest road heading southeast; after a gentle ascent of 600 m, you’ll reach Mitterschöfl (882 m) and the Leopold Figl Observatory. Since the core zone of the biosphere park is not open to hikers, return along the forest road to the fork in the trail and then follow the ascent trail back to St. Corona.
