At the Weilburg coat of arms, we immediately learn something about the famous castle, which was built as a symbol of Archduke Karl's love for his young wife Henriette. After the ascent, we explore the rooms of the Rauheneck castle ruins with the children. From the keep, we have a wonderful panoramic view of Baden, the Vienna Woods and the Vienna Basin. The rest of the hike leads partly on narrow paths through the hilly Vienna Woods with beautiful views time and again. We stop for refreshments in the well-known wine village of Sooß. To the delight of the children, the way back through the vineyards can be completed in a much shorter time.
Fun fact: Exploring the ruins of Rauheneck Castle with the children and imagining the life of knights is always fun. The view from the tower is an absolute highlight.
From the Weilburg coat of arms, we follow the Beethoven Circular Hiking Trail (Route 40) first to the Rauheneck ruins. After visiting them, we continue on Route 40 into the valley leading to the Jägerhaus. We cross the valley road and climb the opposite slope up to an old quarry, bypass it on the left, and reach a lookout point with views of the Lindkogel and Rauheneck. Continuing to follow the trail markers for the 40, we reach the junction with the red-marked Bad Vöslau–Cholerakapelle trail. We follow this trail, keeping to the left, until we reach a rest area at the edge of the vineyards. We follow the No. 40 trail to the Sooß water reservoir and then turn left down the main road. The return route takes us along the water pipeline path back to Baden. We cross Isabellastraße and continue following the water pipeline to Steinbruchgasse.
