Hiking tour Starting from
The main town in the Triestingtal, the municipality of Berndorf, is nestled in the hills of the Triestingtal, surrounded by black pine forests. The town is known nationwide for its historical development, which is closely linked to the Krupp family. Traces of this period can be seen everywhere in the town. For example, the workers' housing estates, villas, schools and factory buildings bear witness to this period. A museum in Bahnstraße is therefore also dedicated to this era. The style classes of the schools in Berndorf, which are built in twelve different architectural styles, are among the world's most unique art venues of their kind. The Berndorf municipal theater and the Margarethenkirche church also contribute to the town's rich cultural offering. For hikers, there are many varied hiking options starting from the town, ranging from short, educational hikes (forest nature trail) to long, extended hikes (Waxeneck). However, a special highlight of any visit to Berndorf is always the ascent of the viewing tower on the Guglzipf with its panoramic views.
The starting point for this leisurely hike is the train station in Berndorf. If arriving by car, Margarethenkirche or Wasserturm are also possible starting points (via Hernsteinerstraße and Kruppstraße).
At the beginning, the hike leads uphill through the town and the Krupp housing estates to the Margarethenkirche church and the historic school buildings, then through new housing estates to the water tower (you can also get here by car). Here you leave the urban area and hike on mostly good paths, but sometimes stony and rooty, through black pine forests to the crossroads before the Pöllinger Kreuz, where you also reach the highest point of the hike (altitude approx. 470 m). Following the red markings, you reach Pöllau at a leisurely pace, where you can stop off at the "Bockerl-Bar". The way back leads along the little-used Steinhofstraße to Steinhof and along the Weinbergweg with beautiful views of Grillenberg and the Mandlingberge back to Berndorf.
After returning to Berndorf, we recommend a visit to St. Margaret's Church and the style classes or the Krupp Museum directly at the starting point (Bahnhofstraße).
