Hiking tour Starting from Laaben Hauptplatz
Unknown paths - the circular trail via Pyrath and Brand shows us a little-seen side of Brand Laaben, away from the popular Schöpfl trails. Past romantic farmsteads of forest farmers, through wondrous orchards with wild service trees and cornelian cherries, we come to wonderful vantage points and dreamily situated chapels. A peaceful tour that makes every hiker's heart beat faster.
We quickly leave the houses of Laaben behind us and climb up to the forest on a lovely meadow between an old avenue of pear trees. A footpath leads gently uphill through a fairytale beech forest, in which we can read the former importance of this route to Pyrath - the depressions running parallel to our path are former hollow paths; when one was 'worn out', a new one was opened next to it. We can see up to 5 of them next to us (in Germany, some of these are preserved as monuments) - a centuries-old local traffic artery. With the Reschreit estate, we see the first of several farmsteads of the former forest farmers who reclaimed this lovely, varied landscape from the forest. After the estate, the most charming part of the hike begins with a service tree (at the start of the field path on the right, decorated with ivy). On meandering field and meadow paths, we hike to powerful chapels alongside fields, pastures and fruit trees, accompanied by wonderful views in all directions. Although the asphalt road has to be used on the way down to Brand, the views and peaceful surroundings make it easy to accept. After a refreshment stop at the "Singing Inn" and a visit to the
appealing fortified church in Brand, we take a leisurely stroll along a little stream back to Laaben. If you are looking for an end to the tour, you will not be disappointed.
Normal hiking equipment
From the main square in front of the municipal office, we cross the intersection and head towards Brand. After about 200 m, soon after the last residential building in the village center, we turn right onto a meadow path and follow the red marking 404 of the Vienna Woods long-distance hiking trail uphill. Between pear trees, it goes over a beautiful meadow up to the forest; the good 404 marking leads us through a beech forest with old hollow ways and then over a meadow to the Reschreit farmsteads. Shortly before these, it is worth climbing the hill to enjoy the magnificent panorama to the south. Past the farms, we turn right after a short stretch of asphalt road into the first field path. Lined with strong fruit trees, including service trees, the path leads to the quiet and picturesque Reschreit chapel with a lime tree as a natural monument. Now we cross, keeping the field path, an east-facing meadow up to a reservoir. From here, a narrow path leads us between a horse pasture and a row of trees and shrubs (Zeilert) to Oberpyrather Street. A short piece to the right and shortly after to the left, leaving the 404 marking, leads us to the Windbichler chapel. Immediately after the chapel, we turn left onto a romantic meadow path - after a country house and the wayside shrine “Queen of Peace” we come onto the asphalt Pyrath farm road. We keep right, following the signpost to Brand, and walk about 2.5 km downhill along the street to Brand. Along the way, we pass a hillside settlement, a game enclosure, a chapel, the EVN water tank, a newly built chapel (2010), and a wayside cross, and we can enjoy the best views to the east and south on this section. Upon reaching Brand, there is the opportunity to visit the fortified church of Brand Laaben and to stop at the “Gasthaus zum singenden Wirt”. Below the church, a little above the bus shelter, we walk down a gravel farm road through a diverse orchard to the Floriani chapel. Reaching the hollow, we then leisurely follow the Pyrathgraben brook back to the village. Upon arriving at the Hotel zur Post, we turn left and are back at Laabner main square after about 150 m.
