On this tour, you can enjoy numerous insights and views around Eichgraben. According to UNESCO guidelines, the Vienna Woods in the Eichgraben area is a biosphere forest with a unique cultural landscape in Europe. The area is characterized by a juxtaposition of forest (over 60%), fields, meadows and orchards. However, the forest has been in serious danger before. In 1872, a quarter of its area was to be sold for logging. The journalist Josef Schöffel and the newspaper "Neues Wiener Tagesblatt" succeeded in preventing this by means of a large-scale public campaign. The timber industry and the profession of charcoal burner had been important local industries since the Romans settled here. At the end of the 19th century, the Viennese discovered the Vienna Woods as a recreational area. Since then, the area has attracted thousands of visitors every year who enjoy the unique landscape.
However, this tour is only a "small" section of the entire Eichgraben high-altitude hike. You can find the entire route on the website of the Vienna Woods Museum website.
Normal hiking equipment
The route starts at Eichgraben station. You start on Viadukt Weg and follow it to the Hauptstraße. Then follow the green/yellow marking No. 11. You continue along the Hauptstraße, under the railway viaduct, where a historic steam locomotive can be seen, then past the Knödler inn. Afterwards, follow the green/yellow marking No. 11, turning right twice, over Schweighofstraße into Paukhofstraße. The path climbs steeply until you reach a forest track. Follow this to a T-junction. Then turn right and immediately left to get to the high-altitude hiking trail. Follow this trail until you reach Götzwiesenstraße. In the town center, the green/yellow marking points left. Follow it onto a flat field path. You pass the Schönhof and Windbichl farms; at the latter, turn left towards the east. Then descend past Nestlhof and finally under motorway A1 to Steinhäusl. Here you cross Kaiserhöhenstraße and the Lengbach, following the green/yellow marking all the time. You come to the junction with Berggasse, which marks the access to the high-altitude trail No. 9. From here, follow this access, i.e., the green/yellow marking No. 9. You now pass through a densely built, uneven area. After going under the A1, you go over Klarahöhe to Badner Straße, then turn right onto Herrenhofstraße, and then right again onto Wiesenerstraße. Keeping left leads you via Efeu- and Zyklamenstraße to Schattaustraße. You pass a small wooded area and go under an aqueduct of the 2nd Vienna high spring water pipeline; Nagelbach flows to the right. Continue by turning right twice, over Herrenhofstraße back onto the Hauptstraße of Eichgraben. Past the Bärenwirt inn, you return to the starting point.
