Maria Anzbach is a place of pilgrimage with a long history and an impressive landscape. The first evidence of settlement dates back to the Bronze Age and the village was first mentioned in a document in 998. The renovated market square in the center of Maria Anzbach is home to the "Zum Goldenen Löwen" inn, which has been in operation since 1779, the old schoolhouse and the Goldammer Museum. Karl Goldammer worked at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna and had many exhibitions in Austria and abroad. His preferred motifs are depictions of cities, especially Venice. The pilgrimage church "Maria Anzbach Zur Mutter der Barmherzigkeit" is an eye-catcher. In its basement are the bones from the former cemetery. The first church was built in 1456. During the Turkish period, the church was connected to the old smithy via an underground passage. To the south of the village lies the Kohlreithberg, from where you can enjoy a fabulous view of the Anzbachtal valley from the newly erected Millennium Cross. The ascent to this 516m high Wienerwald peak is challenging in places, but well worth it. If you hike around Maria Anzbach, you will spend most of the time in a natural forest dominated by copper beech and spruce. In places, the trail leads across extensive pastures of the region's cattle and horse farms.
Route description:
The tour starts at the market square in the center of Maria Anzbach. Here you will find the "Zum Goldenen Löwen" inn, the Goldammer Museum and the pilgrimage church. A detour to the nearby Schönbeckmühle mill via Schmiedgasse is well worthwhile. From here, head east along the main road. After a few meters, follow the blue markings to the right, up Bahngasse. At the top, cross under the railroad station in the direction of Kronesstraße. This is where the green signs for Götzwiesen/Kohlreithberg begin, which you follow uphill. After approx. 300m you are in the forest and always follow the green markings. Here the trail climbs steeply in places. After a longer hike (approx. 2 km), you reach a crossroads where you turn left. You finally emerge from the forest near the village of Götzwiesen. Here you will find another crossroads and the Goldfischerlteich pond. Turn left onto the road and follow the blue markings towards St. Christophen. You cross the tranquil village of Götzwiesen. In the middle of the village, the blue markings point to the right - ignore them and stay on the road. From here you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Alpine foothills. After approx. 500m you reach the settlement of Kohlreith. Here you turn right onto a fenced-off path between paddocks, the blue markings indicate the route. You are now on the Kohlreithberg nature trail, where you continue straight ahead until you reach the summit. The last 150m is a small trail. You have reached your destination at the Millennium Cross. The view from here stretches as far as the Waldviertel and Weinviertel, but Maria Anzbach and Neulengbach with its castle are particularly beautiful. After you have immortalized yourself in the summit book, turn around and walk back to the settlement of Kohlreith. At the end of the nature trail, go straight ahead and follow the blue markings towards Maria Anzbach. Follow a narrow forest path downhill through beech forest. At the foot of the hill, you cross a small stream and, back in Maria Anzbach, reach Josef Schöffelgasse. At the end of this street, turn left onto Schwabstraße, continuing to follow the blue markings, and then cross under the Western Railway. You pass the former hotel "Zur Reichskrone", then turn right along the stairs of the "Schulweg" to the church, cross its courtyard and find yourself back at the starting point.
