Despite the most thorough research, routes may be subject to unforeseen short-, medium-, or even long-term closures (e.g., due to restricted forest areas designated by landowners). Some of the parking options we recommend may be privately owned or subject to a fee—please pay attention to the on-site signage. Some trails may pass through sections or entirely through areas operated by entities that charge fees (e.g., nature parks or gorges). However, this is usually explicitly noted in the description. All information is provided without guarantee, and use of the trails is at your own risk. Please observe any trail closures as well as notices from hunters and landowners.
Having the right basic gear is essential for a safe and enjoyable hike. This includes sturdy hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing, and a lightweight backpack. Essential items include plenty of drinking water, a small snack, sun protection (a hat and sunscreen), rain gear, and a first-aid kit. Depending on the length of the hike and the terrain, hiking poles, maps, or a charged cell phone with emergency numbers may also be useful. Your gear should always be tailored to the weather, season, and difficulty level of the route.
At the St. Andrä/Wördern train station, we turn right to the end of the parking lot, cross the stream, and follow the path to Hagenbachg. At the Lehnerg. intersection, we cross the Hagenbach and follow it to Greifensteiner Str. (L118). From here, turn right until we turn left onto Hittnergasse at the Florianikapelle and follow it to the bridge (St. Andrä trail junction). At the trail junction, the red trail marker branches off. Keep to the right and cross the bridge onto Wiener Str. (B14), where Wallenböckg. continues behind the church. After the parking lot, turn left onto Ristelweg. The trail leads uphill through a sunken path to the wayside shrine. From there, continue through the forest to a wide forest road. Turn right onto it and go straight through an intersection with two other forest roads. Follow the forest road slightly uphill to the intersection with another forest road, where the trail continues to the left with a new signpost. The trail continues slightly downhill to the Schillerin trail junction. From here, take the path downhill, which leads into a forest road where you’ll meet the red trail from St. Andrä through the Hagenbach Gorge. From here, walk briefly along the forest road between pastures until you reach the bird of prey breeding station. If you follow the red trail markers, you’ll reach the playgrounds and continue on to Unterkirchbach.
