The market town of Hirtenberg is located at the end of the Triestingtal valley, where the Lower Austrian Prealps border the Vienna Basin for the first time. While the village area itself lies on the plain at 280 m above sea level, gentle mountains rise up to 470 m to the north and south of the municipality. The municipality itself is heavily influenced by industry (including the Hirtenberg cartridge factory), but has the advantage that the natural area begins right at the edge of the settlement. The influence of the Pannonian climate is very noticeable here, as dry black pine and oak forests predominate, while beech forests are usually only found on more humid northern slopes. The hikes from Hirtenberg lead to the surrounding hills such as Lindenberg, Pfarrkogel and Guglzipf (viewing tower) and surprise with beautiful views and impressions of nature, despite the low altitude. The hiking options are rounded off by a beautiful forest nature trail at the Steinkamperl.

The forest nature trail of the market town of Hirtenberg explains the forest habitat on a leisurely walk through the mixed and black pine forest on the Steinkamperl with nine display boards and several exhibits. The nature trail is easily accessible, as it starts right on the outskirts of Hirtenberg, near the church. On the way, you cross the children's playground twice, so the nature trail is also suitable for families. At the end of this short hike, you can stop off at the "Goldener Hirsch" inn right next to the church square.
Hiking gear not required
From the church square, walk to the left past the church (sign: “Erholungsraum Steinkamperl”) and climb a few steps up to Waldgasse. A few meters down this gravel road to the right, you’ll pass the “Reviereinrichtungen” exhibit. Staying on Waldgasse, after 100 m you’ll reach the actual start of the nature trail, marked by the “Overview Sign” and the “Interesting Facts About the Forest” sign. Here, turn left off Waldgasse and walk along a forest path, past pitch pines, to the children’s playground, which you’ll cross (sign: “Forest Nature Trail”). Following the forest path, you’ll reach the Union parking lot (tennis courts). Keeping to the left, pass the signs “Edible Mushrooms” and “Poisonous Mushrooms” and walk through between the tennis courts on a gravel path; immediately after the tennis court fence, turn right onto a forest path (sign: Forest Nature Trail). Follow the path, past the “Birds” sign, straight ahead for 200 meters through the forest until you reach a trail junction (stretching station on the fitness trail). Turn left here, go over a gentle hill, and continue straight ahead at the crossroads. Following the wooden signs, turn left and walk slightly downhill on a wide forest path until you reach the signs marked “Hoofed Game” and “Predators, Small Game.” On the forest trail, keep left and continue slightly downhill, walking along the former running track. When the tennis courts come into view, the forest nature trail branches off to the right (50 m before the tennis courts) onto a narrower forest path. Passing the signs marked “Flowers” and “Butterflies, Beetles,” you’ll reach the meadow at the Hirtenberg Sports and Recreation Center. Cross this meadow in the direction of a large oak tree, where a forest path (sign: Forest Nature Trail) leads slightly downhill back to the playground. From here, take the familiar path to the right back to Waldgasse and the church square.
Parking lot by the church, Church Square
Take the A2 Südautobahn to the Leobersdorf exit, then follow Federal Highway B 18 to Hirtenberg. At the second traffic light in town, turn right onto Alte Gasse and park by the church.
By public transportation: Hirtenberg train station; follow the sign for Großau/Vöslauer Hütte and the red markers along Bahngasse to the B 18 federal highway; cross the street into Alte Gasse and continue to the church square.
