Cycling tour Starting from
After the longer second stage, there is a shorter day stage that invites you to relax and linger. For example, in the Cistercian monastery of Lilienfeld with its famous cloister, four kilometers from the main route.
From there, the tour leads back to the fork in the cycle path at the railroad bridge over the Gölsen with a nice rest area; this is then followed on the small but beautiful Gölstental cycle path to the day's destination of Kaumberg.
In view of the climbs on the next day's stage, a shorter tour is also advisable.
Characteristics
Landscape and nature
After St. Pölten, you gradually leave the meadows and vineyards and gradually enter a pre-alpine environment with green meadows on ascending slopes, albeit on a level path throughout; The detour to Lilienfeld is also a brief visit to the most densely wooded area in Austria; wooded areas in seclusion were once typical of the Cistercian settlement; however, the Traisen also shows its gentle side in Lilienfeld and invites you to explore theThe river Gölsen, the jewel in the crown of the Gölsen river, is a true "nomen est omen", as it fulfills its Slovenian origins.fulfills its Slovenian-derived promise as "the gurgling one" particularly melodically in some places; the stage town of Kaumberg is located in the southwesternmost region of the Vienna Woods; and by the way: the Wienerwald is the easternmost foothills of the Northern Alps and thus the north-eastern end of the Alps.
Mixed traffic
No coexistence with motorized traffic except for through-town traffic.
Gradients
Apart from a few meters (driveways, etc.) to Hainfeld, there are virtually no climbs. But beware, the most challenging part of the entire tour awaits you up to Kaumberg. At the transition from the Gölsen to the Triestingtal valley, there are 200 meters of ascent to overcome and even after that, two more steep, albeit short, climbs await cyclists. The reward for climbing the more challenging variant is the magnificent views of the Triestingtal valley below the Araburg castle. But there is also a gentler form of transition with the alternative over the Gerichtsberg: along the main road to Kaumberg.
