The last 50 meters before the Troppbergwarte have large, high steps. The large rocks could be very slippery. However, there is an alternative route. The Troppbergwarte itself (iron-grated steps) may be icy in winter, or icicles could fall. Caution is advised here.

At the Rekawinkel train station, we immediately join Long-Distance Hiking Trail 04 and stay on it until we reach Troppberg. An information board with a detailed hiking map provides important information in advance about all the hiking trails in this area. From the parking lot, we hike westward, about 400 m alongside the state highway, until we reach the edge of town. Caution: Here we have to cross the road at a somewhat blind curve. After that, we enter a residential area, where things quickly become quieter. We walk about 150 m along the state road before turning right into the forest. For the next few hours, we won’t see or hear any cars. The route mostly alternates between forest and meadow trails, and there are few notable inclines along the entire route. The trail leads over the Großer and Kleiner Siefelberg (497 m) to Rauchengern, where we cross the county road.

From here on, in addition to the red long-distance hiking trail markers, we’ll also follow the blue markers. We reach the Troppberg (542 m) after about 3 hours, passing through the unassuming Hinterer Steinberg, past the Mirli Inn—which is especially popular with children because of its many animals—and past the Wienerwaldhof Rieger. From the large trail junction below the summit, it’s another 5 minutes along the now steeply ascending, blue-marked trail to the Troppbergwarte, the highlight of the tour.

Built in 1991, the lookout tower has a viewing platform 24 m above the ground and offers a magnificent view over the treetops toward Vienna, the entire Vienna Woods, the Alpine foothills, and all the way to the Tullnerfeld. We now head back to the large trail junction below the Troppberg summit and, from here, follow the green-marked hiking trail all the way over the Buchberg and the Kranawetten (410 m) to the Purkersdorf-Zentrum train station.

Please be careful in the forest, as the cold weather may cause some areas to be slippery.
