Felix Stieglmeier – Winemaker from Mödling
From Shanghai to Mödling: I’m Felix Stieglmeier, a native of Nuremberg and founder of the F. Stieglmeier Winery.
My enthusiasm for wine began unexpectedly—during my four-year stay in Shanghai. What started out as a simple personal interest gradually turned into a true passion. Eventually, I knew for certain: I didn’t just want to enjoy drinking wine—I wanted to make it myself.
I was the first in my family to choose the path of a winemaker. After completing my winemaking apprenticeship, I studied viticulture and oenology, supplemented by practical experience in Germany, Italy, and New Zealand. During this time, I had the opportunity to get to know different wine regions, working methods, and philosophies—experiences that continue to shape me to this day.
Eventually, my path led me to Mödling. Here, I finally found the place where I want to bring my own vision of wine to life.
My philosophy — “There are plenty of complicated wines out there—you’re better off drinking this one!”
That saying pretty much sums up how I see wine. Wine can be exciting and full of character, but it doesn’t have to seem complicated. I’m all about authentic, uncomplicated wines that bring joy—and that make you want to pour yourself another glass.
My Wines
My current lineup includes three organic wines: two Rieslings under the name “Riesling Calling” and the Grüne Veltliner “Gretchen Grün.” The two Rieslings show just how different the same grape variety can be—from a fruity, fresh summer wine to a full-bodied pairing for meals. “Gretchen Grün” is a fresh, juicy, and uncomplicated Grüne Veltliner. And, of course, that’s not where it ends. Another exciting project is already in the tank.
My winery
F. Stieglmeier is still a young winery. Much of it is just getting started; ideas are being tested, and the next steps are being planned. But that’s exactly what makes it so appealing to me: I can forge my own path and, step by step, bring my vision of wine to life.
